Working It Out is a weekly radio program presented on WLIS 1420 AM Old Saybrook, and WMRD 1150 AM Middletwon every Monday from 12:30-1:00 PM. Working It Out examines, analyzes and discusses contemporary workplace issues and experiences that impact the life-cycle of organizations, and particularly the people in them.

The show combines the organizational and managerial expertise of its host, Bob DeLisa with the similar expertise of scheduled guests, and – most importantly – listeners who contact us with work-related problems and experiences. Our philosophy with guests and listeners is that we know a lot about how work works, but not everything. We see the program from a “let’s learn together” perspective.

Some typical subjects/issues we expect to discuss:

  • A co-worker who’s interruptive/loud/uncooperative/competitive
  • An unreasonable boss who’s demanding but not available for guidance and coaching
  • An “Important” employee who’s habitually late/sloppy/dismissive of others
  • An employee who says “yes,” but acts “no”
  • Not getting balanced feedback from the boss; always hearing about the minuses, never the pluses
  • Rigid company policies; not allowing flex-time
  • A team that seems broken; in-fighting/unproductive/lousy morale
  • How to decide to leave the job or stay
  • Email “wars”

On the plus side:

  • The best boss I ever had
  • A telecommuting policy that works
  • Secrets of a solid, high-performing team
  • An employee training program that produces outstanding customer service
  • Tips for recruiting the best people
  • How morale can be maintained during tough times
  • How a family business separates the family from the business

In each show we’ll present brief “essays” on typical work issues and processes; and read and comment on relevant articles taken from business/management publications (e.g. Business Week and WSJ) and the Internet.

We’ll also have several offbeat features that ostensibly might have little to do with a work issue, but in the end connect to the workplace. In fact, we see the show spilling over to daily life or family issues because they are so similar to the ones people face on the job (e.g. “You’re not the boss of me!”).

In sum, we see Working It Out as relevant, informative, entertaining and humorous.
